2026-01-23

The History Department invited a group of 16 students to participate in an intangible cultural heritage workshop on 23rd January, 2026, in Sam Tung Uk Museum. The Museum itself is a declared monument in Hong Kong and where the Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre of Hong Kong is located. The theme of the workshop was jiao festival from the Taoist culture. Students had the chance to learn about the history and rituals for jiao festival, and one highlight was using bamboo poles to construct a temporary theatre performing Cantonese opera during the festival. Students were given a chance to have the hands-on experience to try out the technique of securing several bamboo poles together.

After the workshop, the students joined a guided tour to see different objects and crafts made for the jiao festival displayed in the Museum, including lion dance costumes and huge flower boards. The docent also explained the architectural layout of the Museum, which was revitalised from a Hakka House.
